Prostate cancer

Individualised investigation, diagnosis and treatment planning for suspected or confirmed prostate cancer.

Understanding the condition

Prostate cancer can behave very differently from person to person. Assessment may include PSA testing, examination, imaging and biopsy. The significance of results, disease stage, overall health and personal priorities all contribute to the treatment discussion.

01

Symptoms that may need assessment

  • Often no symptoms in its early stages
  • Urinary changes that require assessment
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Persistent bone pain or unexplained weight loss in advanced disease
02

How it may be assessed

  • PSA interpretation in clinical context
  • Prostate examination
  • MRI or other imaging where appropriate
  • Prostate biopsy when indicated
  • Pathology review, grading and staging
03

Care may include

  • Risk-based discussion of treatment options
  • Active surveillance for selected disease
  • Referral and multidisciplinary planning when required
  • Prostate brachytherapy for appropriate patients
  • Ongoing PSA and clinical follow-up
When to seek urgent help

Do not wait when symptoms are severe.

New inability to urinate, severe weakness or numbness in the legs, or loss of bladder or bowel control requires urgent medical care.
