Kidney stone treatment

A tailored pathway that may include observation, laser surgery, ureteroscopy, stenting or nephrolithotomy.

Why it may be recommended

Treatment aims to relieve obstruction and symptoms, clear stones where needed, protect kidney function and reduce infection risk. The recommended option depends on stone size, location, anatomy and clinical urgency.

Before

Preparing for the procedure

  • Review imaging, urine and blood results
  • Discuss medication, allergies and anaesthetic planning
  • Treat infection before intervention where possible
  • Follow fasting and admission instructions provided by the practice
During

What generally happens

Depending on the stone, treatment may use a telescope passed through the urinary tract, laser energy to fragment the stone, a temporary JJ stent, or a small access tract into the kidney for selected larger stones.

After

Recovery & follow-up

  • Temporary urinary discomfort or blood-stained urine may occur
  • A stent can cause frequency, urgency or flank discomfort
  • Follow medication and hydration instructions
  • Attend planned stent removal and follow-up
  • Stone analysis and prevention testing may be discussed
