Stone procedure

Ureteroscopy & laser stone surgery

Endoscopic treatment using a fine telescope passed through the natural urinary channel to reach a ureteric or kidney stone.

Why it may be recommended

Ureteroscopy allows the urologist to see the stone directly, fragment it with laser energy and remove selected pieces without an external incision.

Before

Preparing for the procedure

  • Confirm imaging and urine results
  • Discuss anaesthesia and medication adjustments
  • Arrange transport and support after discharge
  • Follow fasting instructions
During

What generally happens

A slim telescope is passed through the urethra and bladder into the ureter. The stone may be fragmented with a laser and fragments retrieved. A temporary JJ stent may be placed to support drainage.

After

Recovery & follow-up

  • Expect some burning, urgency or blood in the urine initially
  • Stent symptoms are common when a stent is used
  • Use prescribed medication as directed
  • Seek help for fever, worsening pain or inability to urinate
  • Return for stent removal if required

  1. 01Where is my stone?
  2. 02How likely is a second procedure?
  3. 03Will a stent be needed?
  4. 04What symptoms after surgery are not normal?
